Our Story
The foundations of our floral expertise trace back to the early 1950s, when Robert William Downie established the business on Mount Pleasant, focusing on growing and wholesaling a variety of cut flower crops. His pioneering spirit led him into the auction market, becoming a commission buyer who diligently sourced and purchased flowers on behalf of retail florists stretching from Kaitaia to the Bluff. These carefully selected blooms were then packed and dispatched, initially by rail in wooden boxes, and later by efficient road and air networks using cardboard cartons.
A significant milestone arrived in 1968 when Downies Flowers was officially established as New Zealand’s first independent wholesale distributor of fresh cut flowers. Our commitment to innovation continued into the late 1980s with the birth of the popular “Downie Bunch” concept. This initiative made small, convenient bouquets accessible, selling through supermarkets, corner dairies, and petrol stations throughout the Christchurch area.
